About Soo Durham

For the past two years I have been exploring the qualities of Parian clay. Parian was essentially designed to imitate carved marble and utilised mainly for busts and figurines and occasionally for dishes and small vases.  I however have been producing pieces on a much larger scale which presents quite a few technical challenges.  These problems have taken a lot of experimentation and patience to overcome.  A journey I believe well rewarded by the beautiful soft translucent qualities Parian bestows.

I have always been drawn to the simplicity of the black and white palette but it has taken me until now to find the confidence to solely explore this concept, thus liberating me from a ‘bucket mountain’ of coloured glazes!  My exploration into this monochrome vision using my unique slip application affords me endless surface interactions and tonal depth.
